Jazz at Lincoln Center

Using audio from an interview captured two years prior to his passing, in which Roy Hargrove reflects on the composition and performance of "The Love Suite: In Mahogany," we crafted this project to directly incorporate Roy into the narrative. Our aim was to honor Roy Hargrove's "lightness of spirit" with a playful yet sophisticated perspective.

Throughout this piece, we seamlessly integrated various visual animation styles, paying homage to Hargrove’s genre-defying performances throughout his extensive career. Abstract and loose linework mirror the "lightness of spirit" that resonated in every note Hargrove played, ultimately shaping the modern musical landscape. Lively accent colors and dynamic animation acknowledge the intricate syncopation of jazz and echo the "jolt of youth" that Hargrove infused into the genre. To maintain a modern and refreshed approach to jazz, we used a clean digital sans serif, with assets and shapes maintaining defined edges. Textures are thoughtful without being overwhelming, and stills are elevated with motion, adding intrigue to empty spaces.

Celebrating jazz maestro Wayne Shorter’s illustrious career, we delved into his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, his role in Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, and his leadership in groundbreaking projects. Revisiting Blue Engine Record’s release of "The Music of Wayne Shorter," we explored Shorter's collaboration with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, featuring a colorful collage in various styles — from photography to portraiture — accompanied by abstract shapes and colors that nod to mid century jazz poster graphics.
