Happy and You Know It

To create the documentary’s graphics package, we tapped into a sense of childlike curiosity and the rebellious energy of punk music, echoing filmmaker Penny Lane’s playful yet insightful exploration of the children’s music industry. The film looks beyond familiar kids’ songs to spotlight artists who take children’s culture seriously—musicians shaping how young audiences learn to listen, feel, and care about the world. Music and subculture became the foundation of our visual language, guiding the creative process and shaping the energy, tone, and attitude of the design.

The design draws from a modernized punk-rock aesthetic, featuring gritty photographic treatments, cut and torn paper, photocopy textures, and a bold color palette inspired by classic punk show flyers. Taking a hands-on, tactile approach, many graphic elements were created physically and scanned, allowing imperfections and texture to play a central role. The result is a graphic system that feels expressive, playful, and deliberately rough around the edges—mirroring both the creative freedom of childhood and the DIY ethos of punk.
