The premier issue of Damn Joan was all about Happy Death, exploring the death of trends, gender conformity, and bad journalism. One particular story by Kaitlyn Greenidge shared the incredible acts of Henrietta Duterte, the first female undertaker in the US. Duterte used her mortuary to smuggle escaped slaves through the Underground Railroad.
Our team was asked to create a visual excerpt that would draw audiences to this powerful story. Inspired the delicacy and ingenuity of Duterte’s heroic deeds, our fabrication process was thoughtful and deliberate, using fine point pens and carefully cut paper to craft each element in the story.
